About Software Development
Our software development course will teach you to design and develop a range of programs. You will learn Java as your core coding language and key soft skills such as project management, databases, case diagrams and essential office skills. Your tutor will help you develop proven professional coding skills through object oriented coding, design patterns and frameworks.
Software engineering combines problem solving, creativity and analytical skills. It suits those who are detail oriented with an eye for solutions. There is an ever-increasing demand for new software and a wide variety of clients across a range of sectors are looking to employ skilled software developers.
You will be taught by experienced teachers and we also support you with employability, including opportunities to speak to professionals and access mentoring, volunteering and work experience.

- Cybersecurity: Learners will investigate the accidental and malicious security threats that exist to IT systems and data. They will learn about system vulnerabilities and the tools and techniques used to protect users from risks and potential damage, including loss of data, loss of data integrity and unauthorised access to data.

- Digital Skills Career Progression: This unit provides learners with an understanding of the importance of digital skills in the workplace and how changes in employment have led to an increase in demand across a number of sectors. Learners will learn about the different types of job roles where digital skills are required, and the characteristics valued by employers to establish a successful career in todays digital economy. Learners will also identify their own career/progression goals and plan how they will develop their digital skills to meet their intended goals.
- Computer Programming: In this unit learners will learn about the principles of computer programming to understand how programming works. They will develop text-based programming skills to design and develop their own computer program.
- Digital Skills Project: Learners will develop the knowledge and skills to plan, develop and review a digital skills project.

- Customer support provision for the ICT professional: You will learn how to record and log customer support requirements, existing hardware and software resources, and identify customer needs in the IT industry.
- Software testing fundamentals: This unit has been designed to help a learner build an understanding of these topics: test methodologies. It also focuses on working with software bugs, creating and managing software tests, and even test automation.
- Creating an event driven computer program: This unit covers more advanced concepts of event-driven computer languages and their use to implement, refine and test computer programs.

Principles of ICT system and data security: understanding threats to ICT systems and site data encryption and cryptography - Software testing: test the functionality of your software. including PHP unit testing

Which units will I study for my course?
All our courses have one or more mandatory units and a choice of additional units.
Course content is tailored for you (and your employer) and the list of units outlined here are a guide only. Units covered will also depend on your prior learning and credit requirement. If there is something specific that you are interested in learning, please discuss this with your tutor during induction.
What if I don't have the entry requirements for a course?
There are other courses available to help you build up the skills and qualifications you need to be eligible for our courses. Please get in touch to discuss this further!

During your appointment assessment, we will help you work out which course will be the most suitable for you based on your results, previous experiences and interests.
Will my course cost?
Course tuition fees
As a charity, ELATT works tirelessly to access a range of funding and donations to keep our courses free.
In 2021-2022 we had 900 students in total, and none had to pay fees. That means 100% got a free course!
If you are over 19, not all our Level 3 qualifications are fully funded, so you might have to take out a student loan to do a Level 3 course. If that's the case for your Level 3 course, we'll let you know as soon as you apply.
We also can't train you if you are on a Student Visa, Visitor's Visa or Temporary Stay, or are an Overseas Student.
Each year we support hundreds of different people from all walks of life, of all backgrounds, ages, circumstances and skills levels. There's a really good chance that you can get a free course at ELATT, so apply now!
