ELATT shortlisted at the TES FE Awards 2019

blog-tes-2019

The most outstanding individuals and institutions that the FE sector has to offer have been recognised in the shortlist for the 2019 Tes FE Awards.

Elatt has been shortlisted for the Training Provider of the Year award. Elatt have been shortlisted for these awards every year for the last four years. Elatt is based in Haggerston and delivers English, IT and a range of programmes for young people and adults, including refugees and migrants across five London boroughs. Elatt previously won Training Provider of the Year in 2016 as well as awards for Overall FE Provider and Employer Engagement. Last year Elatt won the award for Contribution to the Local Community.

Tes FE editor Stephen Exley said:
“Excellent practice exists right across the further education sector, and those shortlisted for the Tes FE Awards are the cream of the crop. Our judges were extremely impressed with the calibre of entries. We had more entries for this year’s categories than ever before, and the standard was higher than ever. To be shortlisted is an extraordinary achievement.”

Elatt Senior Life Skills Tutor and Project Lead Tammela Platt explains
“It is important to recognise that charities play an important part in further education, too; that's why the Tes Awards are important for us. At Elatt, our range of funding means that we can provide free courses for many learners who would not be eligible, or not have the finances, to study at a college. At Elatt, we offer many different points of entry for our adult learners, which makes us able to place learners in the most suitable setting. The Tes Awards help raise Elatt's profile and thus the profile of other charity training providers.”

Lola, a current ESOL student said
“I like ELATT because I feel confident here. There is more communication between the students in English because people are from many different countries”.

Georgia, a former 16-19 student said
“they support you and they actually want you to succeed. I’ve always been determined, but now, thanks to ELATT, I have a real pride in myself.”

The winners will be revealed at a gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday 22 March 2019

ELATT recognised at the TES FE Awards 2018

blog-tes-award-2018-2

London, 23 February 2018: Elatt has won the ‘Contribution to the local community’ award at the annual Tes FE Awards 2018.

The Equal Voices project at this East London training provider supports new migrant and refugee women living in social isolation or economic deprivation to become community leaders.
It was developed following a call from Hackney Citizens and TELCO (The East London Community Organisers) for more representation of people from migrant backgrounds in campaigning. The project involves a range of activities, from capability workshops celebrating women’s skills to community volunteering and wraparound English for speakers of other languages (Esol) training.

It has led to the creation of a wide variety of events and activities that have had a transformative impact on the participants. In 2016-17, the 104 women who took part ran seven listening campaigns; 58 community conversation sessions with over 40 regular attendees; five national campaigns; five local campaigns; seven capability workshops; and three charity fundraisers.

Through Equal Voices, 102 women (98 per cent) achieved qualifications at entry level 3, level 1 or level 2 in Esol or functional skills, while 13 per cent gained employment and 81 per cent moved on to further study.
Perhaps more impressive, 24 of the women who took part in the programme became community guides themselves, and continue to engage other disempowered or isolated local people.

The judges said: “This is about a project that is going above and beyond. What ELATT is doing here is really quite profound. The project really goes into the community in ways that challenge all sorts of racial and gender stereotypes. And it works.”

Winners attended a black-tie event at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, hosted by the comic and actor Alan Davies, where more than 800 attendees celebrated and showcased the most exciting ideas, the best practice and the most inspiring teaching and leadership to be found in the further education sector.

We know we play a significant role in the further education sector, especially in the third sector and we want to make sure we’re continuing to pave the way for training providers that provide a unique and personable approach. Our community is at the heart of what we do and we know that our sector needs more limelight than it currently gets.

We knew that last year was special and a significant year for ELATT, but 2017 is set to be just as good. I’m looking forward to seeing how we evolve as a charity and a training provider.’
