About Business Administration

Our Business Administration course is suitable for anyone who wants to work in administrative support roles or to improve their administrative and supervisory skills.

It is a flexible qualification which we can tailor to meet your needs.

What you will learn

The course will teach you how to work and communicate effectively in a business environment and learn the language of business. You will gain practical knowledge and skills and a qualification that will help you move into a career as a Secretary, Receptionist, Administrator, Personal Assistant, Office Supervisor, Team Leader or Manager.

You will become familiar with the software used widely in business and day to day in these roles.

This course will equip you with skills to work in an office supported by expert advice from experienced teachers. We also support you with employability, including opportunities to speak to industry professionals and access mentoring, volunteering and work experience.

  • Communicate in a business environment: communicate clearly and accurately in writing and verbally, meeting deadlines and using feedback to improve your communication ability
  • Manage own performance in business environment: manage your work so that you can work effectively with others, including accepting and following instructions and taking responsibility, treating others with respect, honesty and consideration
  • Improve own performance in business environment: identify ways to work more effectively with other people and set your own learning goals

  • Communicate in a business environment: learn how to communicate both in writing and verbally, whether one-to-one or in group meetings both face-to-face and remotely
  • Principles of business communication and information: understand business principles such as negotiation, development of presentations, creation of business documents and the use of information systems
  • Principles of administration: understand administration principles such as office management, health and safety, team supervision and vital tasks such as minute taking, managing meetings and events organisation
  • Principles of business: understand a variety of business principles including markets, innovation, growth, sales and marketing across the private, public and non-profit sectors
  • Understand the customer service environment: learn the key concepts and practices that underpin good customer service, from first impressions to aftercare and support
  • Manage personal and professional development: identify your personal and professional development requirements and complete a development plan within an agreed timescale and budget
  • Produce business documents: prepare and distribute business documents such as reports, catalogues and brochures
  • Store and retrieve information: learn how to gather, store and retrieve information using filing systems, both paper-based and electronic
  • Provide administrative support for meetings: prepare and support the administration of meetings, including formal and informal meetings, AGMs, committee meetings and virtual meetings
  • Develop a presentation: plan and prepare a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Deliver a presentation: use a variety of methods and media in a presentation, including speech, handouts, slides, cue cards and flipcharts
  • Create bespoke business documents: create documents that meet specific business needs, such as brochures, catalogues, posters, advertising documentation, training manuals and other business materials
  • Word processing: gain confidence using Microsoft Word for a variety of business documentation

Which units will I study for my course?

All our courses have one or more mandatory units and a choice of additional units.

Course content is tailored for you (and your employer) and the list of units outlined here are a guide only. Units covered will also depend on your prior learning and credit requirement. If there is something specific that you are interested in learning, please discuss this with your tutor during induction.


What if I don't have the entry requirements for a course?

There are other courses available to help you build up the skills and qualifications you need to be eligible for our courses. Please get in touch to discuss this further!

Will my course cost?

Course tuition fees
As a charity, ELATT works tirelessly to access a range of funding and donations to keep our courses free.

In 2020-2021 we had 900 students in total, and none had to pay fees. That means 100% got a free course!

If you are over 19, you might have to take out a student loan to do a Level 3 course.
We also can't train you if you are on a Student Visa, Visitor's Visa or Temporary Stay, or are an Overseas Student.

Each year we support hundreds of different people from all walks of life, of all backgrounds, ages, circumstances and skills levels. There's a really good chance that you can get a free course at ELATT, so apply now!
