'No' to ESOL Cuts!

'No' to ESOL Cuts!

On Tuesday 24 November 2015, Phoebe and Yvonne ESOL Entry 2 Speaking and Listening class wrote about ESOL cuts. They took photos and they put on twitter because they really need ESOL classes. They get a lot of help from ESOL.

We need ESOL classes to develop our English skills for a better life in UK. A lot of people have language problems because they come from many different countries. We find it hard to live in UK but if we learn English it will make our life easier to find jobs, do job interviews, help our children with homework, talk with people, go to the GP and the hospital.

'Save the Children' Cake Sale

'Save the Children' Cake Sale

On the morning of 8th October 2015, in front of ELATT building we had a cake sale, which was to raise money to support Syrian refugee children.

Most of the teachers and students brought some cake, biscuits, cookies and international foods. There were some hot drinks such as tea, coffee. Although the weather was chilly, all of us felt warm, because we tried to help the people who need help.

In the end, we raised £98.03 for Save the Children. The cake sale was very enjoyable and rewarding!

Fighting against ESOL cuts

Fighting against ESOL cuts

In London on 14th October in front of the Houses of Parliament, lots of people protested against the government cuts to ESOL funding. The ESOL learners came together to show that they needed their funds back. These people were from different areas of London, different colleges and schools. The students were supported by teachers.

ELATT students from ESOL Entry 1 and Entry 2 led by Phoebe and Yvonne wrote their demands on placards to show them to the media, other people and the government. In the video, they interview each other, talk about ESOL's benefits and chant "NO ESOL, NO VOICE!"

Connected Careers

Connected Careers

Connected Careers was an opportunity for employers to deliver workshops that enabled learners to access the job market or to become successful entrepreneurs by teaching industry relevant skills.

Several workshops were delivered throughout the day and we asked employers to give bite sized chunks of wisdom to our learners after they delivered their sessions.

Our video resources can be used to highlight the need for employers to provide advice on the whole person approach to attaining career goals. They can also be used with students to show the importance of personal development alongside improving the academic skills necessary to be successful.

IT equipment

A lot has been done to reduce our energy usage, educating students and staff on their first arrival on site with an induction pack on good practices with regard to IT, for example turning off monitors and computers after use. Careful placement of Energy Wise posters around the centre acts as a visual reminder and reinforces our policies to both students and staff alike.

Living Wage Employer

Living Wage Employer

Living Wage Employer

As a charity with a single aim of helping people obtain new skills and opportunities to gain employment, ELATT believes that once people gain employment, they should be able to afford to have a decent standard of living. This is why ELATT has opted to be an accredited London Living Wage Employer.

The living wage is an informal benchmark, a salary that is set independently by accredited employers. This wage is not an enforceable minimum level of pay, like the national minimum wage, but it accounts for the minimum pay rate that enables employees to afford to meet their basic needs and lead a dignified life.
